The Maui Public Art Youth Task Force was developed in 2024 as an internship project of 10th-grade Ke Kula Kaiapuni ʻo Kekaulike Maui student Kekaulaiwi Farm. Working closely with our team, he extended an invitation to Maui County students in grades 9-12 to join, and designed opportunities to directly engage with public art projects. Task Force members actively contributed to works that celebrate Maui’s rich history, diverse culture and unique sense of place as their opinions, ideas and suggestions directly shaped each project. To close out the quarter-long internship, the Task Force offered a presentation to a packed house of 150 attendees at the 2024 Hui Mo‘olelo Film Festival.
“The public art program has been an amazing opportunity for me to practice what I’ve learned about my Native Hawaiian culture and language, which I’ve been studying since preschool. Being part of this program has allowed me to connect more deeply with my roots while also giving back to the community through meaningful projects. It’s helped me see how the skills and traditions we’ve been taught in school can be used in real life to make a difference.” — Kekaulaiwi Farm |
